Microsoft Edge – Open from Run or Command Prompt

As many (almost all) applications available on Microsoft Windows platforms can be called from Run command (as even from Command Prompt and Powershell). Users who have been experiencing issues with the Start menu or Start menu search can use the Run command to launch their favorite programs, admin tools and settings.

In the next few steps we will show how to start the new Microsoft Edge browser from via Run command, PowerShell and Command Prompt.

Run command

Open Run command box by simultaneously pressing Windows Logo and R keys.

In the text field, type microsoft-edge:// or microsoft-edge: and then press Enter key.

Command Prompt or PowerShell

The first step is to open Command Prompt, if not already running. This can be done by typing CMD in either in Start menu search box or Run command box, and then pressing Enter key. Note that you don’t need open Command Prompt as Administrator. To launch PowerShell, type its name in the Start menu search box and then press Enter.

In the Command Prompt or PowerShell, type the following command and then press Enter key to launch Microsoft Edge browser in Windows 10.

Open a URL in Edge from Command Prompt

Type start microsoft-edge:http://example.com in the Command Prompt and then press Enter key to open the URL.

For instance, to open Google in Edge from Command Prompt, you need to type start microsoft-edge:https://google.com and then press Enter key.
